Philip Hudgson Dorrel
"Capsules (Who is it)"

Philip Hudgson Dorrel was born in San Andres Island and began making art at a young age. Although he is a painter, he is fascinated by working with capsules that give him a different perspective of this planet, the environment and the footprint we leave behind. In these works, he tries to create realistic images using capsules as pixels and letting the brain do the rest of the work. His mission is to give voice to a world that is often warped, marginalized and misunderstood and to enhance the beauty that already exists, using some of the most iconic images from art, film and television. Taking the public to a different path where you can redefine how you think about things, art and communication. „If you can imagine it, it is possible“, as in his creation “Black Girl with Pearl Earring” Berlin 2022. A young woman turns her head to the left, and her eyes are slightly closed as if in a dream; she is wearing lipstick, a blue headband, a yellow/gold dangling scarf and the pearl earrings. What is different from Vermeer’s painting? Or in “Wonder” Berlin 2021. A young man in a plaid shirt and sunglasses turns his head to the side, in the background outlined in orange fading to gold, brown and rust. Who is it, Ray, Steve, Lenny Kravitz or a self-portrait? To understand these works, you must open your mind, take a few steps back and let your imagination run wild. Using this material gives it a different existence, where the material could be the message itself. He gives it back in the form of art. Philip Hudgson Dorrel believes that art should be perfect in its way. And he uses his art to shape the world. The artist collects the used coffee capsules without knowing in advance what colours and quantity he will receive them. The first step is to remove the used coffee from the capsules. They are then washed and dried. He then sorts them by colour. The challenge is that you only have a limited number of colours available to design your work. When creating it, it takes him some time to choose the motif that will impress him and the audience. These unique works are carefully crafted, as each change of a capsule alters the result of the work.
